About Singapore Tchoukball

Have you ever heard of a sport called Tchoukball? Tchoukball, pronounced as “chook-ball”, got its name owing to the “Tchouk” sound that is made when the ball is struck against the rebound frame (in simpler words – the goal frame).

Singapore Tchoukball is a seven-player team sport that combines many essential sporting skills like athleticism, concentration, respect for oneself and others and collaboration.

Today, Tchoukball is one of Singapore’s fastest growing sports. It is played by, at least, 2,000 Tchoukball enthusiasts in the country.

Join us in this new 20-episode sports series commissioned by SportsSG to learn more about Singapore Tchoukball, including how the game is played, the smiling faces behind the neighbourhood team, the grit of Singapore’s national team and coaches and the officials acting as backbone of the sport.

Brief History of Tchoukball

As we all know, most games have humble origins and periods of gradual development before it is recognised as a national or international sport.

Tchoukball is no different. It took time and patience to persuade the masses that this one-of-a-kind sport is genuinely a “Sport for All”. Now, the sport is gaining worldwide recognition.

In the 1980s, Taiwan invested in the sport and the country trained over 200 teams for the national championship. Soon after, Switzerland and Great Britain, the 2 founding countries of Tchoukball’s Global Governing Body – International Tchoukball Federation (FITB) helped cement the international presence of Tchoukball in Europe.

Despite a controversial domestic incident in Japan that caused the World Championships to be cancelled at short notice in the 1990s, Tchoukball made a strong comeback after the World Tournament was held in Geneva in August 2000.

Today, countries all across the world, including Singapore, are organising regional and world competitions, allowing players to connect – truly in the spirit in which Tchoukball was created.

Singapore National Tchoukball Team

Did you know that Singapore has a National Tchoukball Team? Now you do!

To scout promising players of all ages, the Tchoukball Association of Singapore (TBAS) runs a Training Programme all year round. These scouted players are then invited to be developed into great athletes.

Following confirmation, these athletes will remain in the programme and will be referred to as TBAS Training Squad members. The players in the Training Squad are then grouped into age groups, such as M12, M15 and M18 squads (M18 stands for Maximum 18 years old), and coached by the appropriate instructors.

Whenever an international competition is held, the national team for that competition will be chosen from these training squads. As this national team prepares, training will be intensified.
